Things to Know Before You Head to Mexico Mandatory Insurance Liability Laws Become More Common
In the US and Canada, States and Provinces require that liability insurance be in place for all vehicles on the road. In Mexico, things have been a bit more lenient, and proof of financial responsibility was only required in the event of an accident. This meant that as long as you could pay for any damage you caused, you were fine. One must not also forget the part about visiting a Mexican jail until fault is determined that made insurance a handy thing to have. However, it is becoming more common that Mexican states are taking the US/Canada approach and requiring all vehicles be insured.
Similar to the US, Mexico has a number of different states, which have individual governing bodies. In the recent months, several states have passed laws requiring drivers to carry liability insurance at all times, not just when an accident happens. The act of not carrying liability coverage is a finable offense in these states. Recently, the states of Baja California Norte (home of destinations such as Tijuana, Ensenada-Rosarito, and San Felipe) and Jalisco (home of destinations such as Guadalajara, Chapala, and Puerto Vallarta) have passed laws requiring that all drivers carry liability insurance. Other states have similar laws, which makes carrying insurance a requirement.
While we at Mexpro believe that this is an important law, we would also urge our customers to ensure they are protecting their own interests. The liability limits required by the states are typically low ($18,000/$20,000 USD). This means that you could be on the hook for much more damage if you fail to have enough coverage for your particular case. Also, liability insurance does nothing to cover your vehicle. This is why, lien holders, for years, have required that their customers purchase physical damage coverage on their finance vehicles. If your vehicle is not financed, it is important to ask yourself the question, "what if I got in accident today?" The answer to that may shed some interesting light on whether or not to purchase physical damage coverage on your vehicle.
The policies sold by Mexpro meet all the state requirements, and offer lots of optional coverage to ensure you are properly protected when traveling to Mexico.

Mexico Home Insurance Coverage Spotlight:
Cabinets aren't Contents – Mexico Insurance Confusion
I spoke to a customer this morning that had a very interesting question. He was insuring his home, and was trying to calculate how much coverage he would need for his home and personal belongings. His question was, "Are my cabinets part of the contents (personal belongings) or are they apart of the home (Dwelling)?" He went on to explain that another insurance agent representing a different company had told him that his cabinets would be considered as contents.
While I can't speak for another company and how they insure their customers, I can speak for our policy. If it (whatever it is) is permanently attached to the home, it is a part of the home. This includes light fixtures, flooring, and yes, cabinets. In other words, it insures the home like it would be insured in the US.
What is interesting is the problem that this situation underscores. There are many differences between US-style and Mexican-style homeowners insurance polices. The program Mexpro currently sells is based on US-style coverage, but is underwritten by ACE Seguros S.A. While the only way to really know how things are covered is to look at your policy and terms and conditions, it is important to understand the basis of the coverage you are looking to purchase. Is it based on a US-style policy or not? Don't get caught with your expectation of coverage not meeting what is actually covered.

Mexico Homeowners Insurance Policy Changes
You spoke and we listened! Last spring we launched our Mexico homeowners program, which has been a hit with many of our customers. We have heard a lot of positive feedback because of the style and nature of the program. The program with ACE Seguros S.A. is designed to meet the needs of US and Canadian ex-pats living in Mexico or those with second homes/condos in Mexico, but unlike many programs in the market it is designed like a US policy. Meaning many of the coverage options are like your US policy.
Over the past year we have received a number of suggestions in regards to how we could better our product. We have taken many of these recommendations, and have now incorporated them into our policy. This year we are excited to announce a number of changes to the policy.
1. Glass losses are now subject to the same deductible as the Dwelling. Meaning there is no longer a separate glass deductible.
2. Up to $2,500 of coverage is available for pergolas that are attached to the primary dwelling.
3. Other structures can now have palapa in their constructions (subject to limitations).
There are many other upgrades to the policy in addition to these, as well several unique coverage options for condos.
