The U.S. Department of State advises travelers headed to Mexico to follow a these safety guidelines:

• Check the U.S. State Department website for the latest international travel information.

• Ensure entry and exit requirements for Mexico are met.

• Carry a valid driver's license.

• Do not bring firearms or knives into Mexico. Mexico imposes harsh penalties for any weapons.

• If U.S. citizens find themselves in legal trouble; they should contact the closest U.S. Consulate, U.S. Consular Agency, or the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City.
